Men's 3s
Team Report 2007/2008 by Rennie Kay
After our fourth place finish last season hopes were high for challenging the top three this season, despite losing a few players we still felt we could mount a challenge! Unfortunately this has not been the case due to not being able to get a consistent team and missing players in key positions. We have only managed three points from eight league games and a Cup exit to Kelburne IV, which ended in a broken toe for me and a 6-2 defeat!
On the plus side we are seeing the future of the club coming through with four fourteen year olds playing regularly and fast becoming first choice in their positions. David Thornton managed to score on his debut (despite Darren trying to claim the goal) and along with Chris Allison, Jake Hibbert and Duncan Riddell they are all proving a great asset to the team.
Our only victory came against Carnegie 3 in the form of a 4-3 win, this probably should have been easier but despite tiring towards the end we held on for the full points. We put in a good performance against a strong Edinburgh Uni 3 side, losing out 4-2 in the end, and this was followed by a very disappointing 2-0 defeat to (of all teams!) Graham High 2. Then came our only other point so far against Stew Mel 3 – a tetchy affair ending in a 0-0 draw.
Things started to look slightly better before the Xmas break so hopefully we can build on this and I see no reason why we can’t prove that we belong in this division!
Thanks to everyone who has helped us out this season with umpiring, especially Craig Paterson, Malcolm Reid and John Watkins. I am definitely not going to be able to continue as Captain next season as Ann is expecting our first child at the end of July, so we really need to start thinking about who would be willing to do the job for next season!
