Ladies' U16's
Ladies' U-16 cruelly lose out on flicks
Our U16 Girls team fell agonisingly short of winning the Scottish Cup when they lost 3-2 on penalties to MES at Peffermill. A 1-0 half team lead was cancelled out by a late MES equaliser and, although Shona Millar made a couple of great saves during the shootout, it wasn't to be our day.
The team had qualified for the final by beating Robert Gordon's 8-0 and drawing 2-2 with a very good Kelso side in the league games, and a deserved 2-0 win over Glasgow High in the semi-final.
The team and coaches Lyndsey Allison and Christy Thomson should be proud of their achievements. The loss in the final was their only defeat of the season.
Ladies' U-16s into the Scottish Finals
Congratulations to the Watsonians U16 Girls, who won the East of Scotland League with a comfortable 9-0 win over St George's at Tipperlinn.
It was a great team performance, with some superb passing. Moire MacKenzie controlled the midfield, Janey Millar was rock-solid at the back, and Natasha Jacobs was always a threat up front, but it was the 'youngsters' who stole the show. Fizzy Johnson was on top form, scoring 4 goals, Fiona Rae and Hannah Cockburn showed great skills, and Laura Bell had her best game for the team.
The team have been outstanding this season, winning all their matches, scoring 23 and conceding only 1. Well done to coach Lyndsey Allison for all her hard work. The team go to the Scottish finals at Peffermill on 15th March full of confidence.
Goalscorers were: Fizzy Johnson (4), Lucy Walker (2), Becky Little, Mairi Drummond, Moire MacKenzie.
Sunday 25th January
Watsonians U16 girls recorded a superb 2-1 win against current Scottish champions, Mary Erskines, in an exciting league match at Tipperlinn.
Natalie Binnie was on great form, setting up the first for Natasha Jacobs and then scoring herself to make it 2-0. MES came back strongly and scored to make it 2-1 before missing a pf.
The second half was end-to-end exciting hockey, with both teams looking dangerous in attack. The 'Sonians defence were outstanding, with Janey Millar, Christina Arthur and Nicola Whyte all very strong in the tackle, and goalie Shona Miller made a couple of crucial late saves. The younger players who came on didn't weaken the side at all, and Mairi Drummond and captian Moire McKenzie controlled the midfield throughout.
'Sonians need a draw in their last game v St Georges on 6th Feb to win the league and qualify for the Scottish finals.
