Watsonians Ladies U16s win East League
Watsonians U16 girls beat Inverleith 1-0 tonight in a very close match to win the East of Scotland U16 League. Watsonians and runners-up Mary Erskine's go on to play in the Scottish Cup Finals at Peffermill on Sunday 14 March. Congratulations to Lyndsey Allison and her talented squad on being unbeaten during the league season.
5th time lucky!
The Watsonians v MES U16 girls league match finally took place on Friday 26h February at a very cold and wet Tipperlinn. After having to cancel 4 times due to the weather, this game was getting played regardless of the conditions!
'Sonians took an early lead when Fizzy Johnson scored from the top of the D, and were soon further ahead through a powerful drive from Caitlin Gibson at a short corner. Both sides had chances before MES deservedly got one back just on half time through a deflected shot. Both teams looked strong in attack, but the defences coped well, with Christina Arthur and Ellen Katsipanos having strong games for the home side.
MES equalised in a goal-mouth scramble mid-way through the half and both sides had chances from short corners before the game finished 2-2. The midfield battle was very tight, and Ailsa Small, Waverley Miller, Fiona Rae and Charlotte MacCallum performed well for 'Sonians against a skilful MES midfield.
Both teams deserve great credit for playing such good hockey in these conditions, and a draw was a fair result. Hopefully nobody ended up with hypothermia (players, coaches or spectators!)
Watsonians play Inverleith at Tipperlinn on Tuesday 2nd March (5.30pm pushback), with the winners becoming league champions and representing East at the Scottish Finals.
U16's win again
Watsonians U16 girls beat Mary Erskine's 2-1 in their latest U16 league cup match at Ravelston on 10 Feb. Claire Errington opened the scoring in the first few minutes, before MES equalised to set up an exciting 2nd half. Fizzy Johnson grabbed the winner.
It was a good performance, given that the team haven't played a match for 2 months and had very little training due to the bad weather. They have 2 remaining games, both at home - Inverleith and MES (4th time lucky after 3 cancellations!).
U16s continue good form
The U16 girls continued their good form in the East League Cup with a hard-fought 3-1 win over St George's at Tipperlinn. In an end-to-end first half, both teams missed chances until Fizzy Johnson slotted home late on, but St G's were unlucky to be behind at the break.
The second half continued at a great pace and 'Sonians gradually wore down a resilient St G's defence and began to dominate. Ailsa Small and Charlotte McCallum notched goals to give the home side a 3 goal lead before St G's scored a good consolation goal.
A very strong team performance, with Waverley Miller the player of the match, Nicky Murray impessing in midfield and a very good debut from Emily Gray.
Next up are MES at 2pm on Sunday 13 Dec at Tipperlinn.
Stalemate for U-16s
The Girls U16s drew 0-0 with Inverleith in their second East League Cup match. The 'Sonians team, wearing their new shirts, played well but found it difficult to break down a solid home defence. There were very few clear-cut chances in the game, and neither side could hit the target from their short corners. The game was played at a fast pace, and the standard of hockey was high.
Defences were on top, with Christina Arthur, Rosemary Andrew and Waverley Miller starring for 'Sonians. A good game, played in great spirit, and a fair result. Thanks to Linda Clement for filling in for injured coach Lyndsey at very short notice. Get well soon, Lyndz!

U16s start East League Cup campaign with a win
The Girls U16s had a great start to the season when they beat St. George's 4-1 on 21 September. The team got off to a shaky start and found themselves 1-0 down in only 5 minutes against a strong St G's attack. However, the young 'Sonians team grew in confidence as the game went on and hit back with goals from the lively Emma Stephen and a rocket from Hannah Cockburn to lead 2-1 at half time.
Ailie Clapperton scored early in the 2nd half and Emma Stephen scored her second to complete the scoring. It was a great perfomance by the team in their first game together, and coach Lyndsey Allison was delighted with the discipline and work-rate.
