Mixed U14's
U14s win East shield
Watsonians won the East U14 tournament for the first time ever after a great day's hockey at MES. The team started strongly with 7-0 and 8-0 wins over Firrhill and Livingston, before drawing 1-1 with Cala, leaving them top of the group on goal difference. In the semi-final against Grange the team played their best hockey of the day, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Stuart Nickerson and Barrie Lyell.
This set up a final against Inverleith, who had won the shield 3 times in the last 4 years. In a tense game, strong performances by both defences allowed very few chances, and 'Sonians survived a scare late on when Helen Sime cleared off the line and Inverleith hit the post. The score remained 0-0, taking us to the dreaded penalty flicks. Jamie Connor and Laura Sproule slotted home their flicks, and Helen Sime saved one, before captain Andrew Oliphant's re-taken flick was saved. Helen then became the hero when she saved the final flick, leaving 'Sonians the winners 2-1.
There were 9 different goalscorers: Barrie Lyell 4, Stuart Nickerson 3, Jamie Connor 3, Douglas Johnston 3, Ellis Smith 2, Andrew Oliphant 2, Emily Reid, Laura Sproule, Marnie Davidson. It was a superb team performance all day, with everyone playing their part in a deserved success - congratulations to coach Carolyn Thornton. A special thanks to Christy's mum for the 'rocket fuel' which gave the team a boost when they were tired, and thanks to Neill Sinclair for organising.
Watsonians and Inverleith will now represent East in the Scottish finals on 30 May at Peffermill.

Joanna Harris and Elena O'Neill scored the goals. They came up against very strong opposition in their second games, losing 0-4 and 0-3 to Inverleith A and Grange B teams, but played some good hockey. In the second game they beat Eskvale 2-0 with goals from Katie P and Kirsty Cameron.
The Development team had a comfortable 6-0 win against Kelso B, but were unlucky to lose a late goal against ESM to go down 3-2 and end their unbeaten run. In the first game Royce Miller scored a hatrick, Shayne Kidd two and Sean Horgan one; and Sean H and Sarah Eckstein scored against ESM.

Inverleith Tigers 1 Watsonians B 7 (Johnson 3, Murray, Harris, Hood, Swan)
The A team suffered a very rare defeat in their top of the table clash against Inverleith. The team made a slow start and went in 1-0 down at half time, but came flying out of the traps in the second half and were very unlucky not to equalise. Following a period of strong pressure by 'Sonians, Inverleith broke away and scored with seconds to go. Bring back coach Carolyn! The team turned in a great performance in the 2nd match, beating Dunfermline 3-0. Kirsty McKean topped a 'player of the match' performance with 2 goals, and set up Stuart Nickerson for the third.
Judith's B team continued their impressive form with a 9-0 win against Cala B with hatricks from Hannah Hood and Douglas Johnson, a double from Rachel Murray and a goal from Joanna Harris. They then won 7-1 against Inverleith Tigers, with another hatrick from Douglas and goals from Rachel, Joanna, Hannah and Peter Swan.
Thanks to Gael and Leigh for umpiring.

The C team started with a good 4-1 win over WIT, thanks to two goals apiece from Jimmy Symonds and Euan Willis, but couldn't cope with the strength of a very good Grange A team, losing 7-1. Thanks to those who helped out WIT, as they were short of players.
